Sport is a great metaphor for work and for life. To play the game of success and achieve meaningful results, great leaders are required. Bearing this in mind, SPORT TV challenged pur’ple to develop a new skillset for their teams, enabling them to a purposeful leadership.

Face challenges fearlessly
Focused on producing and broadcasting content,SPORT TVwas the first Portuguese sports-oriented premium cable and satellite television network with five channels in Portugal, one sports news channel and two channels in Portuguese-speaking Africa.
For 20 years and guided by its pioneer character, SPORT TV was aninnovative market leader in the entertainment sectoruntil the company starts facing some impactful business challenges, due to fundamental changes in the market from a worldwide perspective.
To address the ongoing challenges, SPORT TV started a movement of cultural change, strategic redirection and brand positioning and pur’ple was called todevelop leadership skills in middle managers, enabling them to drive the organizational transformation.

The program started with a journey to the “self”, through the application of personality questionnaires and 360º feedback tools, as well as activities that enabled self-knowledge about who the participants are and the reasons behind some behaviors. In this stage, there were also moments of joint and individual reflection, promoting awareness of how teams perceive each leader and pinpointing the areas of individual development.

The second module of the program was focused on the transition from a stage of superior self-knowledge to the discussion of critical concepts and tools toperform as a leader. This exercise enabled the participants to identify the abilities and motivations of the people they lead and to recognize the leadership style to apply in each moment. Thus, situational leadership content was used here, working on real cases of the company

The last module consisted of raising leadership to a more comprehensive, impactful and strategic level, placing participants in the role of coach, and leading them to question and act towards their employees. At this stage and aligned with the strategic pillars of the company, the new leaders were challenged to develop transversal and implementable projects with a direct impact on the business, where they had to apply the concepts learned. The teams were mentored by members of the Management Team, acting as strategic partners.

The champions of commitment
Throughout the program, not only were the participants highly engaged and committed, but also was the organization deeply supportive, since all the employees were invited to select the winning project emerging from the Play (y)our Game program.
Besides a common language and a shared awareness, the leaders were now able to apply new skills in their daily dynamics with their teams. Moreover, and according to surveys applied after, employee engagement results increased significantly, mainly in leadership related topics.

Amongst other impacts, namely teams’ positive feedback on different leadership styles and routines, we had a significant increase in the perception of middle management effectiveness, measured in our yearly survey.
